Since starting this blog, I’ve avoided forums like they were a large group of diseased troglodytes. Elitist Jerks and Arena Junkies are the only forums I visit “frequently”, and the latter is only visited when I have absolutely nothing better to do. Hitting myself in the head with a textbook is included in “better than reading the AJ forums”, and “frequently” means once or twice a week, maybe, for a few minutes at a time.
The EJ forums I can actually enjoy reading, but me and pompous douchebaggery go together like water and more water, so that isn’t really saying much. The AJ forums are like EJ, but replace the “pompous” part with epeens and compensation the size of planets.
Both are actually pretty educational, provided you can survive them. You’ll need a fireproof suit, perhaps a sherpa, but it’s possible.
I was inspired by Megan to try and actively participate in forums again, because she’s right, as always.
I do have my detractors here, but they rarely speak up, and even most of my big critics will immediately jump to my defense. It’s ok guys, really, I’m a big boy now, I can defend myself. Or more often just laugh as people try to troll me. That always brightens my day.
So I decided I’d give the official forums another go. If discourse with people who disagree with me is what I seek, nowhere, and I do mean nowhere, would be better suited for that purpose than the official forums.
I took a deep breath, opened the forums, logged in, and began to participate.
And by “participate” I mean “began trolling immediately”. (This is the thread in question.)
Specifically, I was replying to that Valentyne guy (OF COURSE he’s a belf with that name) by being about as unhelpful and deliberately condescending and provocative as I could. It went a little something like this:
Complaining about how “dull” arcane is as “1111211112” and then thinking spamming frostbolt is more exciting? I’d say you were an idiot, but that goes without saying. The rest of your post says it for me.
First off, the fact that you believe arcane even has a set rotation proves your ineptitude. Second, you allude to running OOM as an arcane mage, and frankly if you’ve ran OOM at any point this entire expansion as an arcane mage, you’ve been doing it wrong. Thirdly…
I stopped myself there.
I sat back.
I carefully looked at my screen, at the hostile, rude, elitist words I had just typed.
Then I asked myself…
What the fuck am I doing?!
I specifically started blogging exactly so I could avoid this sort of thing! What the hell?! I go back to the official forums, and literally 30 seconds later I’m already crafting a deliberately hostile piece of work?
I deleted the entire post, and simply posted the far more useless “Brain Freeze is a waste of talent points, put them somewhere else”, closed the window, then went and cried for hours in the corner.
But I’m willing to try. I’ve made several posts on the official forums, mage forums only. I plan to continue this, trying to be a regular there and see if I can learn things beyond my current knowledge base. I actually already have!
Consider the fire PvP build.
Now, consider Molten Shields. Would you take it? No? Why not?
A fairly good chance to reflect a fire or frost spell fired at you when you have the appropriate ward up? How could you pass that up, really? Imagine the look of terror on a warlock’s face when that Chaos Bolt/Conflag combo he just fired off gets reflected right back at him.
Or get Frost Warding, too, reflecting the Chaos Bolt and absorbing the Conflag completely. I still have to test this, I don’t know if these two talents stack. Presumably, you wouldn’t have 60% and up protection against fire and frost spells, that would be ridiculous. Instead, every spell, the RNG would pick one or the other. You would have, say, a 30% chance to reflect the spell OR a 30% chance to absorb it, but not a 30% chance to do either with only a 40% chance of the spell actually landing.
Again, I don’t know. Maybe it is 60% protection. I haven’t tried it yet. Maybe someone else has?!?!? 🙂
But the RNG WHAT WE DO ABOUT RNG!? You can’t rely on RNG!
Indeed you can’t, but come now. You’re seriously considering speccing FIRE for PVP. You have long since accepted doing things in strange and exciting ways. Is this really such a huge stretch? Besides, fire already depends a great deal on RNG (Hot Streak, fireblast stun, disarm, blazing speed).
By the way, who called the massive increase in shadow priests? BAM that was me OHH YEAH. Good time to be a shadow priest.
