The following post has nothing to do with WoW, but is instead a sad story involving human negligence, somebody dying, and proof that being a cynic is really the only option in today’s world.
So this couple from Quebec take a short vacation to a mountain resort in Golden, BC. On their last day there, they checked out of the hotel, threw all their stuff into their rented car, and took off for one last good ski.
They went out of bounds for fun, presumably. Until they got lost, of course.
They weren’t dressed for bitter winter conditions, had no water, and two granola bars for sustenance. Realizing they were probably screwed, they did the only thing they could think of and carved a giant SOS into the snow.
This was on February 15th.
On February 17th, a helicopter spotted the SOS symbol. So, police asked around the local businesses to see if anyone was missing.
“Hey, anybody missing? Like, disappeared for no reason missing?”
“Oh. Well, thanks anyways!”
Meanwhile, the couple out in the wilderness wondered why no one had shown up after that helicopter flew by.
Couple days later, February 21, another helicopter flew by, saw the SOS, figured it had already been dealt with, and nothing was done.
The car rental company apparently didn’t notice that one of their cars was missing.
Back in Montreal, the couple was reported missing on the 23rd. They were supposed to be home a week ago, so there was some concern. The police in Montreal decided the best course of action would be to get in touch with the police in Banff in a day or two.
See, the couple had told everyone that they were going to Banff for some reason.
Finally, on the 24th (yesterday), a third helicopter was flying around, saw the SOS thing, but this time there was a man standing next to it waving his arms.
So they were finally rescued after nine days! Hooray!
The man is currently hospitalized, being treated for frostbite. The woman is in a morgue somewhere. Fortunately, she’s already frozen for transport back home for her funeral.
Then the Golden police were informed by the Montreal police that the two of them were missing.
“Oh, hey, just thought I’d let you know, but there’s possibly two people missing over there.”
“Yeah, we found them already.”
“Did you? Great, I’ll let their friends know they’re okay.”
Simply put, a combination of idiocy and negligence led to a woman slowly starving and freezing to death while the love of her life stood by helplessly watching her die.
No one is innocent here. The couple either lied about where they were going or didn’t give proper details, thus leading the authorities on Montreal to inform the wrong police they were missing. Then they intentionally went out of bounds and weren’t smart enough to find their way back.
On top of that, everyone else, upon spotting an SOS carved into the snow near a ski resort said “Meh, it’s probably nothing.”

My dad asked me once why I have no faith in the majority of humanity. I’ll add this to the list of reasons.
