Lag is the most powerful force in WoW. Nothing else can even compare. 1500 Stamina is nothing compared to the sheer power of 1500 ms. Even the most well stacked, overgeared raid can easily fall victim to the almighty lag.
Lag allows for clever people to do clever things. Like Spell Steal Ice Block, or Counterspell Counterspell.
Yes, I have spell stolen Ice Block several times, once even in a competitive arena (though that was quite a long time ago). If you’re opponent is suffering from enough lag, literally any buff can be spell stolen.
I once stole a Paladin’s bubble, and then immediately counterspelled the Holy Light he was trying to cast. The Paladin stood there for several seconds, then attempted to turn and flee. He died, and probably ran to the forums and cried about how OP mages were.
Are we? Well… maybe.
Paladin leaps off of Lumber Mill, bubbling himself. Bubble was stolen. Paladin went splat.
Paladin uses Divine Intervention on a mage for some reason. Possibly a misclick. Anyway, I was in combat against this mage, and was attempting to steal Ice Barrier. Imagine my immense confusion when suddenly I can’t move or use any abilities.
Alliance Paladin, dead. Alliance mage, dead soon afterwards when my teammates killed him. Me, Horde mage, standing there ridiculously confused.
Stealing Blessing of Prote… Hand of Protection is just so insulting.
But of course, that isn’t even close to the most terrifyingly awesome things that have happened due to lag.
For instance… did you know it used to be possible to spell steal instant cast spells? Like, say…
Lay on Hands.
I am sooo not kidding. This has happened to me twice. I hit spell steal, then suddenly I get a truly HUGE heal. Thank you, lag. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
Some interesting things I’ve successfully Counterspelled:
- Summon Water Elemental
- Pain Suppresion (no really)
Ok, so technically I didn’t counterspell Vanish, I just hit the rogue with Counterspell (according to the combat log) after the rogue had used Vanish, so that Counterspell broke him out of stealth.
Remember when totems weren’t part if the physical school? Yeah, I totally counterspelled Grounding Totem once.
Of course, lag isn’t always a good thing. It is a twin-edged sword, capable of slicing it’s weilder just as much as it’s victim. Somehow. Ok, not a sword, but like a poorly made pair of scissors.
I’ve had Ice Block counterspelled a couple times, and even Presence of Mind once. Fireblast usually gets countered about every two AVs. That place just lags me to hell and back sometimes.
At one point, me and another mage sheeped each other into oblivion. I sheeped him, he sheeped me. We both sat stewing in Polymorph for ten seconds. It breaks! Hazzah! We both sheeped each other for 5 seconds. And again for another 2 seconds!
Once, I was lagging so bad during a Lurker Below encounter that I wasn’t hit with Spout even though I didn’t move.
Let’s see… what else… I’ve been one shot by Death and Decay (from the Mount Hyjal fight), been critted with Kill Shot at 55% HP, had Ice Block dispelled by Arcane Shot (remember when it did that?), and even bounced Counterspell off of Spell Reflect and successfully counterspelled the Counterspell I just cast, thus locking out my arcane school.
I am sorry.
I’m all hyped up over patch 3.1. I know I shouldn’t be, but the mage changes were just so damn vague, and now I can’t form any coherent thoughts out of wild thinking of what may come in the very near future.
BE TUESDAY DAMNIT!
