WARNING: THE FOLLOWING GUIDE IS FOR MAGES ONLY. THE REST OF YOU POOR FOOLS ARE FLAT OUT OF LUCK. HAHAHAHAHA!
Welcome to Northrend! Now git yer lazy arse to Dalaran so you can summon all your friends there.
Step one is to nab yourself a self teleport to the place. You need to be level 71. Then you do a relatively simple little quest, and then you’re done. That’s it. No other prerequisites.
At 71, hustle over to Dragonblight (the middle southern zone in Northrend), and head to the place located on the map below.
Alliance mages, you’ll want to head to Stars’ Rest. Horde, head to Agmar’s Hammer. There, you will find an image of an archmage who will give you a quest to attune yourself to the leylines of Northrend.
Once you have the quest, you are heading to the westernmost point on the map shown.
There are lots of minions of the blue dragonflight around, and they will expend a great deal of effort to destroy you. Things called “mage hunters” with all sorts of nasty abilities like frostfire bolt, spell reflects, and mana burns.
The landmark you are looking for is kinda large and sticks out like a naked tauren in ironforge.
Nonetheless, it looks like this:
Directly below that is where you need to be. No need to sneak down there, slipping past mobs. Just bullrush through them, hit Slow Fall, and throw yourself off the edge. They’ll de-aggro soon enough.
Once there, make your way to the sparkly center of the pit. Use the crystal thingy the hologram mage gave you.
At some point, you may need to fight this guy.
He is immune to arcane spells, so you are limited to frost and fire for this fight. He is stunnable, though frost mages will be unable to actively root or slow him, as he is immune to both of those mechanics. However, frostbite procs root him just fine. Slightly over 9k health; a fairly easy kill.
He is on a rapid respawn timer, as there is a quest to kill him. If someone else kills it, you can get the attunement quest done without fighting him.
You can get the quest “End Arcanimus” from Ethenial Moonshadow. It’s the second quest in a very short quest chain.
Anyways. Grab the attunement, grab the portal, zip to Dalaran, snag your level 71 spells.
Did I mention that the only class trainer in Dalaran is a mage class trainer?
Enjoy your port, the envy of your friends, and an entire city built and inhabited by mages, for mages.
Note that this entire process can be skipped if you head to Dalaran by a different means. If, say, another mage portals you there, you can simply go to the trainer, learn the spell, and have no need of doing the quest.
I will frown at you and be disappointed if you go that route, however. Beware. My disappointment knows no bounds.
Thank you! This guide came right in time to me. I just dinged 71 and the first thing I wanted to do logging in tonight was to get my Dalaran access but I hadn’t figured out how to do it. Can’t wait to get there (and tease my guildies a bit :))
I dinged 71 and did this without Arcanimus spawning but that could be due to the nice troll hunter that was killing every thing in the area. Nice tip about the slow fall into the spot for the quest.
Also there are lots of nice high towers in Dalaran to free fall … err quickly get the ground via slow fall
Alliance quest starts in Star’s Rest
The alliance quest giver is located at Stars Rest and not at the dot on the map provided.
Thanks much ….great help to get there quickly (and be the envy of all my friends ! hehe)
thank you very much..
Hrm. Strange. The dot should be correct, as the Image of Archmage Modera is present 40.7 : 59.9.
*Checks*
And there she is 28.9 : 55.4. *Scratches head* Even wowhead shows her at both locations.
Colour me confused (Confused is orange!)
Updated map with the other (possibly more correct?) location.
Hey! This made it onto the front page of WordPress.com under the Hot Community Posts section! Gratz! Oh, and thanks for the heads-up. I’ll probably ding 71 tonight, so the info will come in handy.
Wow! front page?
So, this is about a game? sorry, I guess something that horrible …..
I took the easy road and begged my level 74 mage buddy to port me in. Still 70 so off I go! But thank you for blogging warcraft ❤
Wow, nice guide. Seriously man if it wasn’t for wordpress.com (You being on the front page) I would have never stumbled on this. Great find, keep up the good work.
so….being on the ‘front page’ is kinda a mixed bag of good and bad …. noted

So … is this only for mages .. i reread the article and i still i’m not sure if this is for mages only
@ SomeWarrior
Fairly sure that mages are the only ones who can teleport.
There’s actually another way to get to Dalaran, which can be done at 70, or even (I think) in the 60s. 😉 It’s an exploit. 1. Get someone who is in Dalaran to invite you to a group. NOTE: everyone in the group must be at levels that can be in a group for a battleground (e.g. 60 to 70 for AV). 2. Have the leader put the group, AS A GROUP, into the queue for the appropriate battleground. Entering as a group is a must for this exploit. 3. When you get into the battleground, skip the fight, and run OUT of the BG. Presto, you will be in Dalaran! (You will be debuffed as a Deserter, and thus unable to enter another BG for 15 minutes.) It’s WAY worth it, IMHO, to get to Dalaran at 70–Dalaran puts all the other capital cities in the shade. 😉
@ Peleas: You have to be 71 for the BG que to work. You can also just type /afk to leave the BG instead of running.
hello
@Euripedes [sic]
Thanks so much for the helpful tidbit about teleporting. After playing a warrior to 70, I was unaware that teleport spells were unavailable to me — I thought I just didn’t have enough mana to cast them!
I also thought/hoped that perhaps the info on this page could also apply to a non-mage class. It is written from the perspective of a mage, and as you so brilliantly point out “mages are the only ones who can teleport”, but nowhere does it say anything like “you will be rewarded with a teleport spell to dalaran”. You do mention the vague “self teleport” in the first paragraph. And since there are many quests throughout the game that involve a teleport (even for non-mage classes), one might understandably be curious if this quest might apply to any class.
But instead of clarifying your obfuscating description of the quest for others, you took the opportunity to be sarcastic and superior. Well done. /golfclap
“This blog covers things that have to do with mages.”
From the “About” page.
“Step one is to nab yourself a self teleport to the place.”
“bullrush through them, hit Slow Fall”
“He is immune to arcane spells, so you are limited to frost and fire for this fight. He is stunnable, though frost mages will be unable to actively root or slow him, as he is immune to both of those mechanics. However, frostbite procs root him just fine.”
“Grab the attunement, grab the portal, zip to Dalaran, snag your level 71 spells.
Did I mention that Dalaran the only class trainer in Dalaran is a mage class trainer?”
I’m really unsure how you got the impression that this was applicable to anything but mages.
Nonetheless, my apologies for whatever confusion has occurred.
“I’m really unsure how you got the impression that this was applicable to anything but mages.”
I got the impression that this was a strategy for how to complete a particular quest as a mage. And there are countless blogs that contain strategies for how to accomplish some given task by a particular class, even though the task itself isn’t limited to that given class. How many times have you read some strategy that begins “Here’s how I did this on my [warlock, rogue, priest, …]”?
So for someone who arrives at this page via a document search like google (as I did), there is nothing that states that this is for mages only. Perhaps an introduction that states “this is for mages only” would be applicable. Or something indicative in the URL, the title, the menus or the keywords of the page.
Even better, an introductory paragraph that states “The following describes how a mage can get to Dalaran at level 71. Sorry, all other classes must wait for a quest available at level 74”.
You should probably edit your post to indicate that this is a guide for the mage quest to gain attunement to Dalaran. It is kind of confusing for those folks who don’t regularly read your blog.
The easiest ways for regular non-mage folk to get to Dalaran are either a) get a mage to port you, b) get a warlock in Dalaran to summon you, c) get a friend in Dalaran to party up and queue you for BGs in Dalaran.
Very nice guide. I can recall tooling around in Beta trying to figure out how to do this (was 70 at the time). I knew there was some quest but I never played my Mage long enough to figure it all out.
Right now I’m parked in the Inn soaking up rested XP and when I get my DK to Northrend I’ll swap back over and get my butt in gear.
Thanks again for the guide!
Big fat WARNING has been put in the post.

Do you think you could use colors other than orange and red dots on a map and your crappy grammar that makes this guide suck?
My mage and I give you props man!
very helpful and clear! tyvm.
My fire mage and I thank you for your useful. You won’t believe how much misinformation is out there. Some webpages said to to alterac mountains and try to blink through the pink bubble. Didn’t work.
Then i found your page, a couple of easy quests later and I was on my way to dalraran!
Ignore the haters. It was obvious that your info was intended for mage players. As far as the rest of you, how did you get this far in the game without realizing only mages can teleport and portal? Wake up people.
there is something better when you are at the available level to violet hold telll 2 players to summon you at the stone

euripedes stop being an elitist noob.
i have numerous 80s, all did the quest chain and got the port without being mages.
maybe you were too slow to realize this is blizzard’s way of giving everyone the opportunity to easily get the FP to dal without having to… u know… wait til 77 or find a mage.
crazy idea….
noob.
it’s amazing how many of you noobs think that this is the quest chain to get the dalaran portals learned.
my mage is the only character i didn’t do the chain on because i knew the lvl requirements for teleport and portal, and simply had a mage port me up there, and learned the teleport spell.
the quest’s teleportation function is one time only, in an attempt to assist non-mages…probably during the early stages of wrath, when u know, there weren’t any 75 mages.
noob.
Used this tonight tonight to get to Dal for the first time, and I only wanted to go under my own steam. I could have been ported there 100 times over, but there’s something nice about earning it.
Thanks for the info – very helpful and great resource for other mages!
Phat post, good looking blog, added it to my favs!
