In between getting slaughtered by premades in Arathi Basin, I figured I’d whip this up.
Essentially a list of the consumables that you, as a mage, are very strongly advised to get and quaff. It makes you awesome. Like anti whiskey!
Potion wise, there are two “slots” that you can fill for self buffs. Battle is the one slot (referred to ingame as a Battle Elixir) and Guardian the other (referred to ingame as a Guardian Elixir). You can have up to one of each active at the same time. Something labelled as a “Flask” fills both the Battle and Guardian roles.
Flask of Pure Death – Top of the line DPS Elixir if you are raiding as either fire or frost. Adds +80 fire and frost damage; Alchemists make this most delicious flask. Also see the Shattrath version of this item, which you can get for a Mark of the Illidari (New in Patch 2.4)
Flask of Supreme Power – Almost top of the line, but not quite. It’s more of an antique, really. All you raiders from way back when should chug one once in a while just for old time’s sake. And besides, sometimes if you’re too poor to afford the good stuff, nab this. Adds +70 spell damage to all schools; alchemist made. Also has a Shattrath version.
Flask of Distilled Wisdom – If you find your mana pool sadly incompetent, this just might be the flask for you. It adds 65 Intellect, and an extra 975 mana is nothing to sneeze it if you find yourself using your wand before the halfway mark in a given boss battle. (Arcane Mages! Note the spell damage and extra Intellect you get from this flask). Alternatively, if your mana sucks, you could get…
Flask of Mighty Restoration – 25mp5, obviously something for the healer types, can nevertheless be a boon to you, the mage with an inadequate mana pool. Keep in mind that, mathematically, this flask is better than Distilled Wisdom. Look at it this way. 840 mana over a minute, 4200 mana over five minutes, and so on. There is a Shattrath version of this ‘un, too.
Unstable Flask of the Sorcerer – For the cheapskates running Gruul’s.
In case you don’t feel like using one of the above (or are too broke to use one of the above), you can look into using some Battle/Guardian Elixirs. Keep in mind that Flasks persist through death, Elixirs do not.
Adept’s Elixir – 24 spell damage, 24 spell crit. Obviously not as good as the Flasks, but if you aren’t going to use one, this should be your Elixir of choice. I highly recommend it, and is the one I personally use whenever a Pure Death isn’t available. A solid choice as an Elixir.
Greater Arcane Elixir – +35 spell damage. Like the wee little brother of Supreme Power.
Elixir of Mastery – Only get this if a weak AoE in a raid kills you. We’re talking like, Moroes one shots you with Gouge. Really a poor choice overall; nonetheless, if your stamina fails really, really hard, an extra 150 hitpoints might keep you alive just long enough to die the next second.
Elixir of Major Mageblood – A solid choice to go with any of the other elixirs. 16mp5.
Elixir of Draenic Wisdom – Adds 30 intellect and spirit. Another solid choice to go with a nice Battle Elixir, though not quite as good as the Major Mageblood one. Unless your an arcane mage.
Elixir of Empowerment – A solid choice for those who refer to their mage as “McSquishpants” or “Nuke McGoo”. Adds 30 spell penetration which you can find useful by clapping your hands together and saying “Gnaaah!” in an excited tone.
Oils are consumables that you put on your weapon.Thankfully,WoW’s oil system is very simple, and you don’t have to spend time trying to figure outif WD40 or WD30 is a better choice for Gruul’s lair.
Superior Wizard Oil – Adds 42 spell damage. A very solid, cheap oil. You cannot go wrong with this.
Superior Mana Oil – Another one that is usually for the healers, but you can pick it up if your mana bar fails. Yeah, the rest of us will mock you, but I’m sure it’s less embarrassing than pulling out your wand when the boss is at 60%.
Brilliant Wizard Oil – Old skool oil. 36 spell damage and 14 crit rating. It’ll serve you well, and you can seriously argue between this and Superior. Is 8 more spell damage worth 14 crit rating? (The number’s say no, but maybe you like crit a lot?) Only problem is, it is very rare, and very expensive when you can find it.
With your food, you are always going to be looking for the same thing. Ones that increase your spell damage.
The top three you should be interested in are Blackened Basilisk, Crunchy Serpent, and Poached Bluefish. All of these do exactly the same thing. 23 spell damage, and 20 spirit tossed on. These should be the only foods you care about, nothing else compares with them.
Don’t be fooled into thinking Skullfish Soup is any good. I mean, yeah, 20 spell crit is nice, but 23 spell damage is better.
Flame Cap – Increases your fire damage by 80 for one minute. INCREASES YOUR FIRE DAMAGE BY 80 FOR ONE MINUTE. Don’t make me say it again.
One downside, however, is that it does use up your mana potion cooldown. Beware, if you are in danger of running out of mana, popping a flame cap might hurt you. Substantially. Beg for a shadow priest.
