Why I WoW

This was (is?) a Blog Azeroth style thingy (I think? Seems like there were a bunch of posts about it), and as usual, I’m weighing in on it absurdly fashionably late.

In short, I play WoW for the challenge. I play the game because it’s capable of providing a fun environment that tests my skills, my knowledge, and my ability to react to situations and puzzles in a strategical and tactical manner.

I’ve mentioned it before, but here goes again.

The style of game I like is a slower, more deliberate style of game. I am not a twitch gamer, and never enjoy myself when playing a twitch game. That is why games like, say, Unreal Tournament or Counterstrike don’t appeal to me in the slightest, but games like Sins of a Solar Empire or Supreme Commander are games I can happily spend entire days playing without break.

I don’t mind having to react quickly to things, what I mind is having to react instantly to things. If you run around a corner and an enemy player is there in Counterstrike, you have… ohh, maybe a hundred milliseconds to win that encounter. Or in my case, usually die horribly before I even registered that there was an enemy. (more…)

“Good” Players

This is a Blog Azeroth shared topic. There’s a whole list of folk’ll over here who’ve already contributed.

A lot of good thoughts out there, presumably. I don’t know, I only subscribe to my blog and absolutely ADORE everything I write and shun everyone else.

Sometimes… sometimes, I look at myself in the mirror… and… and I whisper love songs to myself…

WHAT IS LOVE?!

Anyways.

In my book, the definition of a “good” player is more abstract than simple things like “not pulling threat” or “not rolling need on everything”. Sure, those are attributes that players definitely have, but that doesn’t necessarily make them inherently good.

That guy not rolling need on everything? Who knows, maybe he’s just lulling everyone else into a false sense of security, and then WHAM the damn rogue takes off with a hunter epic bow or something. (more…)

Supposedly, if my notoriously unreliable sources are correct, there was a  Blog Azeroth shared topic about… well, what I just  said. What will YOU be doing come Wrath Day?

First, actually buying the game. That will be important. Unsure if I’m going to go to a midnight thingy or not. Maybe.

Second, installing/patching and so forth… hopefully there won’t be too much of that. I’ve been on the beta for some time now, maybe that counts? My entire UI has been revamped and is fully usable in Wrath, so at least I don’t need to do that.

And then… let the leveling begin. I won’t be moving lightning fast, there’s no “ARGH MUST GET TO 80!!” drive here. I mean, c’mon, I’ve already played a Death Knight to 74 on the beta, I think I can afford to take the time to dick around a bit now. (more…)

BAST: WoW Killers

BAST stands for “Blog Azeroth Shared Topic”. Now you know.

This all started when ex-Intern Intern Andy (that is what they call you, right?) over at Rogue’s Eye View took a shower. Like many men, he feels that things like showering and pooping are largely complete wastes of time (pardon the pun). However, where as I purchase a laptop and bring that into the bathroom with me when a bowel movement is needed, he chooses to think.

William hung?

So think he did.

It’s going to be a WoW killer!

Many have claimed that whenever a new MMO comes out. Some, such as Tabula Rasa, have very few advocates for it’s Blizzard murdering promises; others, such as WAR, have a seemingly endless fanbase of rabid idiots with terribly geared hunters.

Now all of these MMOs have either filled in some niche WoW hadn’t, or folded up and died. Not one of them has even been capable of taking a firm swing at WoW. (more…)

*This is yet another shared topic via Blog Azeroth*

The question is simple. How do I, a self admitted addict of World of Warcrack balance my WoW time with my RL time?

The answer is simple. RL time? Wuzzat?

The question for me should be “How do you balance WoW with other games?” Now THAT is something I can answer.

I work full time, 40 hours a week. I work 4 days a week, so that gets me 10 hour days, with three days off. As a side note, this has to be the sexiest schedule EVER. 3 days off every week? Golden. Here’s a general idea of how my average work day goes: (more…)

*This is a shared topic through Blog Azeroth*

Like quite a few other MMO’s, WoW follows the holy trinity of Tank + Healer + DPS. The tank gets beat on, the healer keeps the tank alive, and the DPS kills whatever is hurting the tank. This is the tried and true formula for Dungeon raiding, or whatever it is people do in MMO’s.

So the true question is, does this need to be broken up? Does there need to be a fourth archetype added into this, to shake things up?

And most importantly, does WoW itself require this fourth archetype?

As Mooonfire eloquently described over here, there really is only one other “archetype” that could be considered, that of the “Denialist”.

We have our tanks, we have our damage dealers, we have our healers. The only remaining type of character we could have would be a utility class. A class that does little direct damage to foes, but can seriously mess them up in a way that would have the Russian mafia in fits of nausea. A class that does little direct healing to friends, but can seriously buff, assist, or otherwise make their friends more powerful. (more…)
