Well, I can’t post one right now because Warcrafter, the awesome tool I used for the previous post, is currently down.
Internal Server Errors, my sweaty troll arse.
I can try to remember what things are…
Ok, the T4 mage had the staff from… something, full T4 set (meaning that, yes, a successful run of Gruul’s and Bagtheridon is required), the bracers from Attumen… uhh… something from Maiden of Virtue, something from Curator… something from Prince, I think, a quest chain ring… and something else from… somewhere… I think…
Yeah, ok. This isn’t working. I’ll get a proper list once the damn site works.
All items were enchanted as best they could. The T4 mage used blue gems, the T5 a mix of epic gems and blue gems, the T6 mage had the best of the best epic gems.

Now the question is, how much does this mana regeneration actually help out Arcane?
By it’s very nature, Arcane is an intense spec where mana is concerned.
Assuming that you are spamming Arcane Blast, have it running at it’s full debuff, you are spending 633 every 1.5 seconds; even faster if you have spell haste.
Let’s take a cool, all nice and slow like.
Seconds : Not-quite Seconds
00:00 – Mage starts casting Arcane Blast
02:50 – Arcane Blast completes, 195 mana spent
04:67 – Arcane Blast completes, 536 mana spent
06:50 – Arcane Blast completes, 1023 mana spent
08:00 – Arcane Blast completes, 1656 mana spent
09:50 – Arcane Blast completes, 2289 mana spent
Wow. Dear old Arcane mage has spent over 2k mana in under ten seconds. Give him another 5 seconds, and he’s already far past the amount even the most powerful mana potions can restore.
So let’s balance it out. Take something nice and simple. Assuming roughly the same thing I assumed yesterday (that is, Shaman in the group, BoW, and, oh, let’s say the mage himself has exactly 301 mp5 so the total is something retardedly simple like 400) let’s see what happens to our mana consumption in the same ten seconds.
00:00 – Mage starts casting Arcane Blast
02:00 – This is where mana would restore, but he hasn’t spent anything yet, so nothing happens
02:50 – Arcane Blast completes, 195 mana spent
04:00 – 160 mana restored, 35 mana spent
04:67- Arcane Blast completes, 376 mana spent
06:00 – 160 mana restored, 216 mana spent
06:50 – Arcane Blast completes, 703 mana spent
08:00 – 160 mana restored, Arcane Blast completes, 1176 mana spent
09:50 - Arcane Blast completes, 1809 mana spent
10:00 – 160 mana restored, 1649 mana spent
Same ten seconds, except now the mage has an extra 640 mana to work with; enough mana to cast another full Arcane Blast at max debuff.
Alright, let’s do this a little more extreme. There’s a shadow priest in the mages group, capable of outputting 800 DPS. However, it does take him a few seconds to really get going, so for the first 6 seconds he restores a little under what he normally would.
And I have here a ten sided die (0-9, technically 1-10, but the “0″ represents ten) to simulate clearcast. If it rolls a “0″ the spell is free. Mage still has BoW and a shaman in the group.
00:00 – Mage starts casting Arcane Blast
02:50 – Arcane Blast completes, 195 mana spent
03:00 – 25 mana from shadow priest, 185 mana spent
04:00 – 160 mana restored, 30 from shadow priest, 0 mana spent
04:67 – Arcane Blast completes, 341 mana spent
05:00 – 35 mana from shadow priest, 306 mana spent
06:00 – 160 mana restored, 40 mana from shadow priest (now running at full DPS), 106 mana spent
06:50 – Arcane Blast completes, 593 mana spent
07:00 – 40 mana restored, 553 mana spent
08:00 – Arcane Blast completes, 200 mana restored, 986 mana spent
09:00 – 40 mana restored, 946 mana spent
09:50 – Arcane Blast completes, ZOGM CLEARCAST PROCS NEXT SPELL IS FREE, 1579 mana spent
10:00 – 200 mana restored, 1379 mana spent
11:00 – Arcane Blast completes, 40 mana restored, 1339 mana spent
12:00 – 200 mana restored, 1139 mana spent
12:50 – Arcane Blast completes, ZOGM THERE’S CLEARCAST AGAIN, AREN’T WE LUCKY, 1772 mana spent
13:00 – 40 mana restored, 1732 mana spent
14:00 – Free Arcane Blast completes, 200 mana restored, 1532 mana spent
15:00 – 40 mana restored, 1492 mana restored
15:50 – Arcane Blast completes, 2125 mana spent
16:00 – 200 mana restored, 1925 mana spent
17:00 – Arcane Blast completes, 40 mana restored, 2518 mana spent
18:00 – 200 mana restored, 2318 mana spent
18:50 – Arcane Blast completes, 2951 mana spent
19:00 – 40 mana restore, 2911 mana spent
20:00 – Arcane Blast completes, 200 mana restored, 3344 mana spent
Well, despite the extreme boredom that comes with numbers talking, the numbers do speak for themselves.
Compare this. In those 20 seconds, this arcane mage ended up with 3344 mana less than what he started with.
With no mana regeneration whatsoever, no priest, no clearcast, no mage armor, this exact same mage would have spent 6720 mana in that same time span.
Psssst, CharDev. More reliable than Warcrafter, generally loads faster. Good times.
:O
OH LAWD
Euripedes…you have WAAAY too much time on your hands
do love your theroycraftin’ though !
Can’t speak for myself, I don’t play a mage. Based on info I got of some of my fellow-raiders they specc 40/11/10 or 40/0/21 and do a cycle of 3x AB and then 3x fireball/frostbolt.
the 3x frostbolt does very nice damage still, and it allows the AB-debuff to dissapear allowing for steady DPS’ing without burning through their mana.
They don’t run with an spriest, mostly moonkin + 3x mage + lock.
